It’s a wonderful and extraordinary technique, and it’s worth learning! In order to master the art of staying awake, one must profoundly know about the sleep patterns or the different phases of sleep. On certain days, it is very easy to wake up in the morning, and sometimes it feels unfeasible. Mostly you wake up feeling refreshed, re-energized and rejuvenated; but occasionally you feel groggy, tired, lethargic, drowsy and exhausted, even if you abide by the similar sleep schedule. This is induced by incomplete sleep phases and there are precisely four different phases of sleep. Each phase lasts for about 90 minutes and takes you through three different brainwave patterns, namely, Delta, Theta and Alpha. Alpha is light sleep, Theta is deeper sleep and Delta is very deep sleep. When a person sleeps, much of the sleep cycle is spent in Delta(heavy, dreamless sleep). The remaining two phases(Alpha and Theta) follows in the latter part, which is accompanied by rapid eye movements and active dreaming. Each sleep phase has particular and distinct physical patterns. If any of the sleep phase is interrupted or incomplete, you wake up feeling groggy, tired and drowsy. You feel a desperate need to go back to sleep, hence it makes you lethargic and exhausted.

The RAS( Reticular Activating System) is the component of the brain that regulates alertness and vigilance. The monotony of a repetitive task signals the RAS, which induces a strong desire to sleep. Monotony mainly occurs amidst a long, boring lecture, highway driving, flight journey, train journey etc. Hence, the RAS has the capacity to hasten sleep, especially in cases of diminishing stimuli. Very often, you encounter less stimulating or de-motivating tasks, throughout the day, when feeling sleepy and drowsy seems inevitable. Henceforth, it’s essential to nullify the RAS.
