Intense sorrow induced by the loss of a loved one, is known as ‘grief’. While grieving, you can experience various types of difficult and heartbreaking emotions, you might also feel that this phase will never pass. These are normal and expected reactions to loss. There are numerous healthy ways or techniques to cope with grief, by implementing these techniques, one can easily move on and make the alteration smooth and painfree.
Grief is the emotional suffering that one endures when a loved one is taken away. The demise of a loved one, divorce, miscarriage, financial instability, post traumatic stress(PTS), death of a pet, terminal illness etc. are certain factors that can cause severe episodes of grief and sorrow. The more substantial the loss, the more profound the grief. Anyhow, certain changes or deviations in lifestyle can also induce grief such as, selling your family home, retirement, pregnancy, changing jobs or neighborhood etc. The grief induced by such kinds of losses or alterations are very temporary and susceptible to change, once you adapt to the new environment.
To overcome and undermine grief, one needs to understand that grief is a subjective and singular experience. It differs from person to person, depending upon the intensity of the loss and the emotional quotient(EQ) and stability of a person. The grieving process is time consuming and prolonged. The healing process is very gradual and can’t be coerced. No one can deliberately pace up the healing process. It has it’s own course and phases. Some people take less time than the others to heal, however, it’s most essential to allow the process to unfold naturally.
There are essentially five stages of grief, they are:
- DENIAL: This normally occurs when people perceive that such an incident cannot happen to them.
- ANGER: At this stage, people start questioning themselves as to why is it happening to them. They start blaming themselves or others for it.
- BARGAINING: During this stage they start negotiating or dickering, in order to prevent the loss.
- DEPRESSION: At this stage, a person succumbs to his/her pain.
- ACCEPTANCE: This is a stage where a person finally accepts his/her tragedy. It is the only stage where one can feel a spit-bit of relief.
These stages are extensively experienced by one and all, and it is perfectly normal to go through them.
There are certain exceptional cases, where people do not go through any of the above mentioned stages, in order to heal. They easily resolve their grief without going through any of the stages. Others, who experience grief, may not go through all the stages in a sequential order. Grieving is a typical process, it is extremely particular and peculiar. It is akin to a roller-coaster ride. Even years after overriding grief, it might be re-ignited at certain incidents such as family get-together, wedding, picnics, funerals etc.
There are certain common symptoms of grief. Many people experience the following symptoms while grieving:
- Shock and disbelief : It happens to most people. It is a feeling of numbness and disarray. During this indication, you might keep expecting a diseased person to show up, even though you are aware that he/she is no more.
- Sadness: This is the most natural and ubiquitously experienced consequence of grief. It is accompanied with feelings of sheer melancholy, despair, vacuum or yearning.
- Guilt: It is one of the most disturbing and prolonged symptoms of grief. It happens when you start holding yourself responsible for the misfortune.
- Anger: This is the indication, that is accompanied by resentment and bitterness. Normally during this phase, you start blaming yourself, the doctors, God or even the diseased person for deserting you.
- Fear: This is another very commonly experienced symptom. You may feel very insecure, powerless and queasy. You will feel scared and solitary, because now, you have to accomplish all the duties and responsibilities alone.
- Physical symptoms: Grief is not merely an emotional turmoil, it has many physical consequences too. Fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, body aches, insomnia, anemia, low blood pressure, diminished immunity, indigestion etc. are various indications of grief.
There are many ways or alternatives of overcoming, coping, dealing or grappling grief. They are as follows:
- Confide in friends, family and other near and dear ones.
- Imbibe comfort, solace, consolation from your faith.
- Join a support group, it’s always advisable to not grief alone.
- Consult a therapist or counselor.
- Confront your feelings and do not suppress them.
- Direct or channelize your grief into something creative, artistic and self-satisfying.
- Attend to your physical health and ensure physical harmony.
- Plan ahead for triggers, initiations or inductions.
There are many medications or herbal remedies that can help you to sabotage or overcome your grief. There are no sure shot guarantees, that they will heal your grief, but it’s worth trying them.
